Pandemics and Politics Project (ppp)

Udi Sommer, PhD and Or Rappel-Kroyzer

The Pandemics and Politics Project (PPP), headed by Prof. Udi Sommer and Or Rappel-Kroyzer (Political Science, History, US Studies Center and The Center for Combating Pandemics) aims to quantify the relations between COVID-19 and political processes in the USA and beyond. We examine how COVID-19 influenced the 2020 US presidential elections, how politics in the form of ideology, gender, race and partisanship influenced the pandemic and how the nature of emergency politics changed in the times of Coronavirus. With data-driven frameworks utilizing bigdata continually scrapped from various sources, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, we study the politics of the vaccination campaign, including its gender gap. Finally, using natural learning processing algorithms, we examine the relations between media coverage of COVID-19 and how various democracies coped at the outbreak of the pandemic.
